Manual Lymphatic Drainage Course

Accredited MLD Training for Qualified Massage Therapists

Looking for an accredited Manual Lymphatic Drainage Course to expand your existing massage skills?

At Healing Hands Studio, our Manual Lymphatic Drainage Course combines essential theory with hands-on practical training, giving qualified massage therapists the knowledge, understanding and practical skills needed to confidently add Manual Lymphatic Drainage to their existing treatment offering.

Training takes place at Healing Hands Studio in Southampton, Hampshire, in small groups of no more than four students. This allows plenty of time for demonstration, supervised practice and individual tutor support.

This is a post-qualification course. Students must already hold a Level 3 Body Massage or Swedish Massage qualification, including Level 3 Anatomy & Physiology.

Course Fee: £245

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Training

Professional Accredited Training for Qualified Massage Therapists

Manual Lymphatic Drainage, commonly known as MLD, is a specialised massage technique using gentle, rhythmic and repetitive movements to support the natural movement of lymphatic fluid.

Unlike traditional massage, MLD uses very light pressure and follows the natural direction of the lymphatic pathways.

Throughout your Manual Lymphatic Drainage Course, you will develop your understanding of the lymphatic system alongside learning the practical techniques and treatment sequence required to deliver a safe, professional and flowing treatment.

Important: This Is Traditional Manual Lymphatic Drainage

This course teaches Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) using gentle, rhythmic and precise manual techniques designed to work with the lymphatic system.

This is not a body sculpting, body contouring or slimming massage course.

It does not teach aggressive massage techniques, body sculpting, wood therapy, cavitation or treatments marketed for inch loss, fat reduction or changing body shape.

The focus of this course is the lymphatic system, correct MLD principles, safe practice and the professional application of gentle Manual Lymphatic Drainage techniques.

What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle and specialised massage technique that works with the body’s lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system plays an important role in maintaining fluid balance and forms part of the body’s immune system.

MLD uses very light, precise and rhythmic movements following the natural direction of lymphatic flow.

This is very different from the deeper, faster or more vigorous techniques sometimes advertised as lymphatic drainage for body sculpting or contouring.

Throughout the Manual Lymphatic Drainage Course, you will learn the anatomy and physiology behind the lymphatic system alongside the correct pressure, rhythm, direction and sequencing of traditional manual techniques.

The aim is not simply to memorise a routine. You will develop an understanding of why each technique is performed and how it relates to the lymphatic pathways.

What You Will Learn on the Manual Lymphatic Drainage Course

The course combines theory with practical, hands-on training.

Anatomy and Physiology of the Lymphatic System

You will develop your existing Anatomy & Physiology knowledge with a particular focus on:

  • Structure and function of the lymphatic system

  • Lymphatic vessels

  • Lymph nodes

  • Major lymphatic pathways

  • Movement of lymphatic fluid

  • The relationship between the lymphatic and circulatory systems

  • The role of the lymphatic system within the body

  • Factors affecting lymphatic flow

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Techniques

During your practical training you will learn:

  • Principles of Manual Lymphatic Drainage

  • Correct light pressure

  • Rhythm and pace

  • Direction of movement

  • Preparing the lymphatic pathways

  • Practical MLD techniques

  • Treatment sequencing

  • Client positioning

  • Therapist positioning

  • Client comfort and dignity

  • Developing a smooth and professional treatment flow

Consultation and Safe Practice

Safe professional practice forms an important part of your training.

You will cover:

  • Client consultation

  • Treatment planning

  • Indications for treatment

  • Contraindications

  • When treatment should be postponed

  • When medical advice may be required

  • Professional boundaries

  • Scope of practice

  • Client aftercare

Hands-On Manual Lymphatic Drainage Training

Your practical training takes place in person at Healing Hands Studio in Southampton.

Each technique is demonstrated step-by-step before you practise under supervision.

Students will both give and receive treatments during practical training. This allows you to understand how Manual Lymphatic Drainage should feel as a client as well as how the techniques should be performed as a therapist.

The pressure used during MLD is considerably lighter than traditional massage. Developing the correct pressure, rhythm, direction and pace is therefore an important part of your practical training.

The aim is not simply to memorise a set sequence.

By understanding the lymphatic pathways and the purpose behind each movement, you will be able to develop a confident, professional treatment flow that you can take into your own practice.

Small Group Training

All Healing Hands Studio courses are intentionally kept small.

Our Manual Lymphatic Drainage Course has a maximum of four students.

Small-group training gives you more opportunity for hands-on practice, questions, individual feedback and tutor support.

You will be able to clearly see each demonstration and practise your techniques under supervision rather than trying to learn from the back of a large classroom.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Course Entry Requirements

This is a post-qualification course and is not suitable for complete beginners.

To enrol on the Manual Lymphatic Drainage Course, you must already hold:

A Level 3 Body Massage or Swedish Massage qualification, including Level 3 Anatomy & Physiology.

Your existing qualification provides the essential foundation in anatomy, physiology, consultation, contraindications, client care and professional massage practice required before progressing to Manual Lymphatic Drainage.

If you hold an alternative massage qualification and are unsure whether it meets the entry requirements, please contact Healing Hands Studio before enrolling.

If you do not currently hold the required qualification, you can complete our Level 3 Swedish Massage training before progressing to the Manual Lymphatic Drainage Course.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Course Structure

Your training combines independent theory learning with practical, hands-on tuition.

Theory gives you the knowledge required to understand the lymphatic system, Manual Lymphatic Drainage principles, contraindications and safe professional practice.

During your in-person training you will watch demonstrations, practise individual techniques, develop your treatment sequence and complete supervised treatments.

By the end of the practical element, you should understand both the principles behind Manual Lymphatic Drainage and how to apply the techniques safely and professionally.

The emphasis throughout the course is on genuine Manual Lymphatic Drainage techniques rather than vigorous massage or cosmetic body-contouring methods.

Case Studies

Following your practical training, you will complete the required case studies.

Case studies give you the opportunity to practise your new skills away from the classroom, develop your treatment flow and build confidence working independently.

They are an important part of moving from learning individual techniques to confidently delivering a complete Manual Lymphatic Drainage treatment.

Your required case studies must be successfully completed before certification.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Course Assessment

Assessment takes place throughout your training and includes:

  • Understanding of course theory

  • Tutor observation during practical training

  • Safe and appropriate application of MLD techniques

  • Correct pressure, rhythm and direction

  • Client consultation

  • Treatment planning

  • Client care

  • Practical treatment assessment

  • Case-study completion

You must demonstrate safe and competent practice before your qualification certificate can be issued.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Course Certification

Once you have successfully completed all required elements of the course, including your theory, practical training, assessment and case studies, you will receive your Manual Lymphatic Drainage qualification certificate.

All course fees must be paid in full before certification can be issued.

Students should check the requirements of their individual professional insurer before introducing Manual Lymphatic Drainage into professional practice.

Scope of Practice

This course teaches Manual Lymphatic Drainage within the scope of the qualification.

It is important to understand what this course does and does not cover.

This is not a body sculpting, body contouring or slimming qualification.

The course does not teach treatments intended for fat reduction, inch loss or alteration of body shape.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage should also not be confused with specialist clinical lymphoedema management.

Treatment of medically diagnosed lymphoedema, complex medical conditions or specialist post-operative rehabilitation may require additional clinical training, qualifications and appropriate professional insurance.

Understanding contraindications, professional boundaries and when a client should be referred to an appropriately qualified healthcare professional forms an important part of your training.
