Anatomy & Physiology

The Nervous System module provides an in-depth look at the body’s communication network, which controls movement, sensation, and bodily functions. Learners will explore how the nervous system interacts with muscles, organs, and other body systems, and its relevance to massage therapy.

This section covers:

  • Central Nervous System (CNS): brain and spinal cord

  • Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): nerves outside the CNS

  • Autonomic Nervous System (ANS): sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions

  • Neurons, synapses, and nerve impulses

  • Reflex actions and sensory pathways

  • Common conditions and pathologies affecting the nervous system

  • Effects of massage on the nervous system, including relaxation and stress reduction

Students will use textbooks, diagrams, worksheets, and self-assessment exercises to consolidate learning. A strong understanding of the nervous system is essential for safe and effective massage techniques and for responding to client needs appropriately.
